where to find jobs in psychology
« on: September 26, 2009, 08:23:35 AM »
It seems that no matter where in the world jobs in psychology are difficult to find.
What do people think about the job  markets locally,  are there enough jobs, are there more applicants than vacancies? what resources do you use to find employers, what resources do you use to help employers find you.

any advice that we can share here on the forum so that members can learn from each other, how they go about finding work in psychology or related professions.

I live in the San Antonio area and there is a huge military presence here.  That being said, the military has many openings here and there for not only professional psychology positions (usually graduate education required though) in a civil service position but also opportunities through independent contracting companies in research (usually at least requiring a bachelors).

I've also noticed a lot of people with psychology backgrounds going into marketing and business as this is a huge area for human behavior research.  Social services also seem to be a big employer of those with psych backgrounds.

My advice would be to not simply limit education to just a clinical track of psychology but to branch out into other areas such as biopsych, I/O psych et cetera.  Also, the more training you receive in the way of practicums, internships, attending conferences, and even publishing papers will go a long way in finding a decent job.  For those in the clinical arena, that licensure is all important whether it be an LPC, LCDC, LMFT, LPA et al.

When seeking a job, don't limit yourself to just the mental health field, branch out - psychology is such a flexible background to have and it gives us the ability to work in many different fields.
