In keeping with the "stage" theme, here is something I wrote a while back (though it is largely just a paraphrasing of a section of Swami Vivekananda's lecture on Gnana Yoga):

"There are two men. One is a poor beggar and the other is a wealthy actor playing a poor beggar. Now, both of them may look the same in their role as a beggar, both of them may act the same, both of them may say the same things to others and beg for the same thing. Both might even occupy the very same unforgiving streets. But there is one difference. The one, the beggar, feels deep down inside that this is his lot in life. That he is the object of the scorn and disdain of others. He feels confined by his beggary, as a mouse in a trap. It is his life and there is no denial or escape. The other, however, the actor, he takes pride in his role as the beggar. He sees that his beggary is but an act, a fantasy. He has very much delved into the life of being a beggar, and has acted as one would act within that life, but it is not his life, in no way. He does not claim the beggary as his own. He is not attached, even while in it, to the life of poverty of the beggar."
