Share your favourite quotes!
« on: April 24, 2009, 05:06:11 PM »
do you have any quotations that you could share with others.

any kind of quote that  you think other people should share maybe funny or inspirational, motivational or insightful.  Whatever.

Could be from any where. a film, a song, a poem, a book. Famous people or something somebody has said to you.

And the  LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as  one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:

Man can will nothing unless he has first understood that he must count on no one but himself; that he is alone, abandoned on earth in the midst of his infinite responsibilities, without help, with no other aim than the one he sets himself, with no other destiny than the one he forges for himself on this earth.
~Jean-Paul Sartre

A child born today in the UK stands a ten times greater chance of being admitted to a mental hospital than to a university and about one fifth of mental hospital admissions are diagnosed schizophrenic. this can be taken as an indication that we are driving our children mad more effectively than we are genuinely educating them. Perhaps it is our way of educating them that is driving them mad.
~R.D.Laing

But thus I counsel you, my friends: Mistrust all in whom the impulse to punish is powerful. They are people of a low sort and stock; the hangman and the bloodhound look out of their faces. Mistrust all who talk much of their justice! Verily, their souls lack more than honey. And when they call themselves the good and the just, do not forget that they would be pharisees, if only they had — power.
~ Friedrich Nietzsche

"People are often unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered; Forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives; Be kind anyway. If you are successful you will win some false friends and true enemies; Succeed anyway. If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you; Be honest and frank anyway. What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight; Build anyway. If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous; Be happy anyway. The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow; Do good anyway. Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough; Give the world the best you've got anyway You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God; It was never between you and them anyway." - Mother Theresa

Quotes are my second favorite thing. My favorite thing are thought-provoking questions. Things like "Would you leave all of your friends for the perfect spouse?". Anyway....here's one of my favorite quotes.

Change the things you can, accept the things you can't, and have the wisdom to know the difference.

"A human being is a part of a whole, called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest... a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty."

- Albert Einstein

"A myriad bubbles were floating on the surface of a stream. 'What are you?' I cried to them as they drifted by. 'I am a bubble, of course' nearly a myriad bubbles answered, and there was surprise and indignation in their voices as they passed. But, here and there, a lonely bubble answered, 'We are this stream', and there was neither surprise nor indignation in their voices, but just a quiet certitude." - Ask the Awakened by Wei Wu Wei

"I will show you fear in a handful of dust" ~ T.S. Eliot

See my shadow changing,
Stretching up and over me.
Soften this old armor.
Hoping I can clear the way
By stepping through my shadow,
Coming out the other side.
Step into the shadow.
Forty six and two are just ahead of me

Trueman Capote said some wonderful things, i like his bitchy frankness when he talks of writing and others works. At times his tenderness and reverence to great writers is very touching.
He likens Isak Dinesen's best works as near perfect and like a gentle breeze against one's face.

For me the memorable one is from Andre Gide.
"" All great works of art are rather difficult to access. The reader who thinks them easy has failed to penetrate to the heart of the work. That mysterious hearthas no need of obscurity to defend itself from overbold approach; clarity does this well enough.
Very great clarity, as it often happens for the great works of French art, by Rameau, Moliere, or Poussin is, to defend a work, the most specious girdle; you come to doubt whether there is any secret there , it seems you touch the depths at once.
But ten years later you return to it and enter more deeply.
It is for this reason that the french language seems childishly easy to learn, then more and more difficult as you hear it better.

Andre Gide, journals.

"I gave way to delight, as mystics have for centuries when they peeked through the curtains and discovered that this world- so manifestly real was actually a tiny stage set constructed by the mind. We discover abruptly that everything we accept as reality is just social fabrications." - Timothy Leary, 1966

In the province of connected minds, what the network believes to be true, either is true or becomes true within certain limits to be found experientially and experimentally. These limits are further beliefs to be transcended. In the network's mind there are no limits. - Dr. John C. Lilly, M.D

Thanks,
"I gave way to delight................."

Made me remember those words all those years ago when i read them as a very young man searching for knowledge. Strange is that you fall into those words like a well known path.
Everything goes into your mind and is stored , when jogged it is recalled.

Still feel it is good to question nearly everything.

Giordano Bruno: (1548-1600): "It is proof of a base and low mind for one to wish to think with the masses or majority, merely because the majority is the majority. Truth does not change because it is, or is not, believed by a majority of the people." (The church burned him alive because he believed that the earth circled the sun.)

Excellent quote!  In response to the church's sentence Bruno is reported as saying:
"Maiori forsan cum timore sententiam in me fertis quam ego accipiam"(Perhaps you pronounce this sentence against me with greater fear than I receive it)

Giordano is one of the Gnostic Saints of Ecclesia Gnostica Catholica.

Another favorite quote of mine:
“...in that silence of the heart, while we keep watch within through contemplation, we are as if asleep to all things that are without."
