This article really speaks for itself.  Myself, I'm ambivalent as to the worth of such projects.  What about the hole in the O-Zone layer, or the fact that 1000's of trees are being cut down in the Amazon rain forest every day, or the fact that ice caps are melting and, I don't know, another shopping mall is going up somewhere...  What do artificially created cells have to say about that?
