What is your hobby? I love to read and listen to music among other things.

Reading and music are definitely on top of the list.  Taking college courses and work are up there too.  Otherwise, I enjoy taking a nice, slow cruise on the river for some relaxing, hiking in the middle of nowhere...  Reinventing myself I guess.

Any special interests?

Special interests...i am very much keen to learn about the mysteries of the universe(human, workings of the universe, etc). That is one of the reasons why I am on this psychology forum.

Reinventing or rejuvenating oneself is important. I do simple meditation. There are times that I simply wonder about the beauty of universe and life. When I walk and see the birds, the trees, the sky, it gives me some sort of inner peace at times. Simple things that you do not have spend any money on..but, it gives me a kind of inner joy.

What about your special interests?

Sounds like you're on a good path of growth.  I get the impression you are "open" to all ideas and thoughts - exploration.  I think that's a great place to be.

I have heard great things about meditation.  I suppose I do a form of it when I run.  I love running through the local Forest Preserves where I find the best serenity - and time to think and clear my head of emotions so I may look at an issue clearer.  I have been spending some money on hiking gear in hopes that, once the major purchases are done, the hiking part will be cheap as I also enjoy doing things that cost less.  I've alredy planned a hike out in California shortly and am looking forward to getting back to nature.  Otherwise, learning about life and psychology are interesting and exciting to me!  I like seeing how people tick and the intriging part of there being exceptions to every rule.  It has basically forced me to try to remember to approach every situation, and person, with a clean slate - no pre-judgements.

What kind of growth have you come across so far?  Where do you feel you could use more?

I recently signed up for a group class that will teach about succesful confrontation.  I feel this is one area I could use much improvment on.  I came from a family where we were taught to avoid confrontation, and when it came time to have an opinion, mine was immediately shot down if it went against my mothers.  She learned early in her life to avoid emotion and anger, so I was taught confrontation in the same way.  There'd be yelling, walking away, then come back like nothing ever happened.  Life was back to normal - and the subject was never talked about again.  We learned to fear making mom angry and uncomfortable and learned to be a good liar and stubborn.  Bad qualities for a relationship.  So, to have a good relationship in the future, I feel I need to learn a bit about confronting well.

You hit the nail right on the head. That is precisely what I feel about people...curiosity to know what makes them tick but more importantly, i have learnt that there are exceptions to every rule. So, this is what I do. I give people the benefit of doubt immaterial of what 'stories' i hear about them or how society looks at them. I do not judge them beforehand. I learn about them....

You are also right about me being on a good path of growth. Reflection, problems, etc. brought me to this path of inner growth...
And yes, I am open to all ideas, etc because "live to learn and learn to live" is one of the  philosophies of life that I practise.

You can meditate while you are running, eating ,sleeping, etc. Zen Buddhsim as practised by Japanese believes in this concept. In truth, mediation/yoga is the union of your Soul with God. So, if your mind is 'blank' and you are calm inside while you are doing whatever, then, you are in the meditative state...Nature is a volume of which God is the author. Nothing could be greater than to enjoy the beauty of Mother Nature. I do not have such a chance. I am surrounded by man-made buildings. So, whenever I see birds especially unusual or take morning walks, I cherish those moments of peace...

Well, when it comes to confrontation, I am vocal. I think that it is important to bring the issues out into the open rather than keeping it submerged/suffering in silence(only in certain cases, i am quiet, depending on certain factors). But, I have alwyas believed a healthy relationship needs honesty and openness. You need to know where you stand with each other, what you think about certain issues and how to compromise or adjust

My brothers have this habit of avoiding confrontation or pretending as if things did not exist(or is because they are guys?). And I think that it is a good thing for you to go for such a course. In my case, if another person gets angry, I will keep quiet(my ego etc does not count me). Because for me it is not about scoring points. Later on, I will still bring the topic up when the other person has calmed down to rationalise etc. Sometimes, people misunderstand this quality in me and think that I am very passive and can be bullied easily or whatever. The truth is that I feel 2 people should not get angry at the same time. ;)
What kind of growth have I come across so far?Well, where do I begin? For me, it has been my spiritual growth

Hobbies, well, I read when I can - although most of it as of right now is for school and work.  Aside from the obvious reading of psychology, neurology, neuroscience and all the rest of the brain sciences, I'm also interested in evolutionary biology and paleoanthropology.  Both of which I often find myself debating about on the internet whether it be about evolution's validity or human origins.

I'm also a musician (guitar and bass - although I'd love to learn piano) and hoping to piece a band together again.  I've also started getting back into martial arts training and may open a small training gym out of my garage with my brother in law - he's a regional mma fighter with a heavy jujitsu background and my background is in aikijujitsu (the predecessor of aikido) and wu dang shaolin kung fu.  However, it's been so long since I trained and I'm a bit rusty and out of shape - grad school has a way of doing that.
