Do I belong here?
« on: August 20, 2010, 09:06:27 AM »
Hey, this is my first night as a member of this forum. I am very thrilled about my discovery! I have been trying to locate a decent Psych forum for some time now. I love the topics and discussions that follow, but I must admit that I feel slightly intimidated. I am not sure I am educated enough to stand toe-to-toe with most of you.  :)  I am a 22 yr old undergrad who cannot seem to find a psych topic that bores me. I am simply hoping that I do not make a fool out of myself for the lack of terminology or proper wording.

Bottom Line: Forgive me ahead of time for anything that I might say.... and you have been warned! haha

Hi, welcome.

I wouldn't worry about not being educated enough to participate. The ratio of psychology students (much less graduates) to people who are interested in whether or not their neighbours broadcast negative energy is impressively unimpressive. If you've read and comprehended one of the major introductory texts, you're in the top of the food chain.

Frankly, your biggest challenge here might be staying interested enough to post if you aren't the confrontational type. Here's hoping!

I dont think it will be an issue. I work midnights so I have ALOT of free time on my hands. Unlike other forums, I keep finding new and intriguing topics that I am geeked about throwing my opinion and perspective into! yay!  :) The true concern is that someone might take offense to my direct and blunt nature. That is a fact that Ive coped with throughout the years. haha

Direct?  Blunt?  LOL, I too worried if such attributes would be liked or disliked around here.  As I soon found out, they are highly favored characteristics to be had--so long as you back them up with adequate reason/sources.

Judging by your attitude in your last post in this thread, I'm sure you'll fit in quite nicely here.  Welcome to the forums!  :P

hi welcome,

is it possible that you are more direct or blunt than voodoo scientist? probably not, and even he is welcome here!

I have found that I look forward to what the Voodoo Scientist has to say. Just like me, there might be a more tactful way of explaining his views, but they sure are accurate and valid. This should be interesting :)

Hello and welcome. I too look forward to the challanges posed by Voodoo Scientist and others here. I have always enjoyed debateing or discussing things. This sight has been interesting and I am sure it will continue to be so. Do you think we will ever run out of topics to discuss? LOL!

There are three posters...those with problems and those with clinition knowledge and those don't have these but want to help...  You don't need to have PH.D in pyschology for this forum.  Let's say someone suffers from aniety or depression.  You know nothing about it...you want to know...or, maybe even help.

Even a post like, "I've never had that.  What's it like?"

That is a very valuable post!

Clinitions will give ideas.
Sufferers allow you to know that the person is not alone.
Someone who knows nothing about tells the sufferer... someone cares!

If know nothing about something...you care and that is great post!

Entangled was a CNA working in psychiatric hospital for many years, and enjoyed taking to people.  Since then, he has studied psychology and sociology and has been a patient himself with OCD, anxiety and depresssion...

I'm, not a therapist.  I'm an advocate for professional help!

Sparrow,

 so nicely put!

Some posts here are so interesting because they give you a view point that you would not have otherwise.
I like many of the posts because they are about dealing with feelings and people who are struggling in situations.

What better forum?

Thank you all for the comments.

Trivia Question Time!.... I have been cruising through websites lately trying to find a reliable company that publishes Psychology lectures on CD or DVD. I work midnights at a job that pays me to be awake, and not much more. I spend 6 hours of an 8 hour shift sitting in front of my laptop... I could really use a boost in my brain activity. haha Any ideas? Concerns? Suggestions? Please tell me someone out here knows of a decent website! <crossing fingers>

Have you been to iTunes U. there are free lectures on numerous topics including psychology and philosophy.

the lectures are mostly produced by respectable universities. only problem you have to watch them through iTunes or an apple device. see http://www.apple.com/education/itunes-u/

apart from the there is The Teaching Company. see http://www.teach12.com/greatcourses.aspx

and one other big producer of education material i cant quite recall.

Hi, I'm so new here my first post, don't know yet how to post elsewhere. Consider this;
"Unwittingly believing some of our thought-images are real, changes the status of the images from representations/proxy to a referent in and of itself."
We all did it early in life when we "unwittingly believed" our concept-image of 'boogyman' was real. Most of us never stopped doing it, only we change the images used.
Examples; "I thought the gun was empty." You can find your own "I thought" mistakes. The classic example is the placebo effect.
It's so common, it's taken for granted, goes virtually unnoticed,  it's 'pandemic'. It's the side-effect of using language, that we we're never warned about.
