What can I do about feeling Depressed at night?
« on: March 09, 2009, 12:21:54 AM »
Depressed but only at night?
During the day I'm happy/okay. But at night I start to get depressed and worry about burglars, death, being kidnapped, etc and can't sleep. I have depression/anxiety or whatever and I saw a counselor for a while when I was in foster care and they gave me pills (Celexa), which didn't help, but then I went home and my parents are against that kind of stuff so I stopped going to therapy. So is there anything I can do so I stop being upset?

It seems to me that you are having issues with fear more than depression, the former causing the latter.  Are there any specific things you do before bed or a particular room that you are in when these fears occur?  Does this occur every time you attempt to go to sleep or is it intermittent?  How intense are these fears of kidnapping, death, etc.?    The more detail you can relate, the easier it will be for someone to administer aid.

One possibility off the top of my head is the use of introspection.  Obviously if this is occurring regularly then you are aware that these fears are completely unfounded.  As such you can determine logically that no harm will come to you.  So then it all comes down to attenuating the flow of the illogical thoughts.  Try forcing these thoughts out of your head when they occur by thinking about these fears rationally and seeing that they hold no water on their own.  Facing them in this way will allow you to see them for the illusion that they are.  It might not be easy at first, especially while in the grip of the fear, but with practice and perseverance you will find that it will become easier.  If this isn't exactly for you then more information would certainly help in determining a superior solution.

@Rose:
Normally, you should sleep at night.
So what about that? ;)

I think the best solution is to have someone whom you can always talk at night whenever you feel depressed. It is normal that people feel depressed at night and worry about everything but it is all up to us and only we can decide how we should live whether freely or depressed.

Well, if you can take chocolate/cocoa drink and still sleep(some people can!), then, it will help you get over your depression at night. And some soothing instrumental music would help too. Best of luck. Cheers

We have the same issue. I'm always depressed during night time especially when I'm alone doing nothing. I always cry at that moment. What I did when I feel like the night depression is at hand I avoid watching depressing tv shows. I always watch comedy shows that would make me forget loneliness and as much as possible I'm with my hubby doing some silly stuffs together. Try doing things that would make you laugh. :)

Listen to soothing jazz music while soaking in a tub to help you relax and calm yourself. Taking a long, leisurely bath can help relax you. Warm water can soothe aching muscles and calming bath oils can help to unburden you. Try burning aromatherapy candles for an added benefit or try a few drops of lavender oil on your pillow, it will make you feel relax. Some people have found reading various Self Help Article to be of benefit in overcoming their depression. Indulge yourself reading articles like this.
