Burning or Branding Ones Self

I have heard of this being another form of self mutilation that is actually probably used more than cutting. As a kid I saw kids left and right burning themselves with lighters and things of that nature.

Have you heard of this or seen this before? Do you think this is caused by the same things as cutting?
