Hi, I have a question.
« on: August 20, 2009, 11:20:03 PM »
Hello everyone, I would like to ask a question to those familiar with the DSM-IV-TR. I have looked at the criteria for dissociative identity disorder (D.I.D), but I am still confused. I have even directed this question clinicians and teachers alike and have received conflicting answers. The DSM-IV-TR lists the presence of two or more distinct personalities, correct? Does this mean two alternate personalities along with the clients dominant personality, or the dominant personality and one alternate. I know D.I.D is usually marked with several alternate personalities, rarely just a couple.

Sorry to ask such a dumb question, but I have only received conflicting answers until now, and the wording of the DSM-IV-TR is not much help either.

Thank you

Jason

Diagnostic criteria for 300.14 Dissociative Identity Disorder

A. The presence of two or more distinct identities or personality states (each with its own relatively enduring pattern of perceiving, relating to, and thinking about the environment and self).

B. At least two of these identities or personality states recurrently take control of the person's behavior.

C. Inability to recall important personal information that is too extensive to be explained by ordinary forgetfulness.

D. The disturbance is not due to the direct physiological effects of a substance (e.g., blackouts or chaotic behavior during Alcohol Intoxication) or a general medical condition (e.g., complex partial seizures). Note: In children, the symptoms are not attributable to imaginary playmates or other fantasy play.

From this definition I'm going to say that the answer to your question would be dominant personality and one or more alternates.  However, remember than the DSM-IV is only a guideline, and is not set in stone.
