Hello
« on: December 11, 2008, 12:12:01 AM »
Hi? Hello? Salutations? I can never figure out what to start off with. There's so many ways to say a greeting, I can't make up my mind. Anyway, I am a high school senior getting ready to graduate, and looking towards a career in Psychology in the near future. To be honest, I can't see myself doing any career other than Psychology. It's just so fascinating.

I've always wanted to get into people's heads. To know what they're thinking, why they did this, why they thought that. To understand the feelings of others, along with my own. I know Psychology could help me understand all these things. And it became an obsession when I learned that my grandfather was schizophrenic. There are so many questions I have in life, but no way to answer.

So I hope to gain a lot from this forum, and thanks for the welcome.

Welcome!  I like the name!!

I think it's great that you're pursuing Psyc.  I love learning about different disorders, theories, and all that.  Interesting stuff.  Have you chosen a college?  Are you planning to attend a local one?

I hope you'll find the reading here interesting -- feel encouraged to start some topics of your own.

Can't wait to read more of you!

Well, to start off, I'm in the U.S., Alabama to be more precise. I haven't pick a college yet, but I'm getting close to a decision. As for what I want to do specifically............I was thinking of going into clinical psychology, but it's a little intimidating to me.

Why clinical, and why intimidating?

Clinical is my thing, incidentally.  Hospitals and such for 24 years.  Not much a research guy, though I enjoy it.

I'm thinking of clinical because I'm very interested in disorders. There's so many types and kinds, it just draws me in for some reason. I've always been interested in the abnormal. But at the same time, I'm afraid that the job would be too much for me. Whenever I think about how it'll be, I keep thinking of these white hallways with people who've given up on society. I just think of it as a serious and emotionaly draining job. I have a bad habit of making things worser than they appear, though.

What I have heard from every psychologist and my professors is that anyone who wants to be a psychologist has to be in treatment one point of their lives.
And when u get into undergraduate do a field work class, that will show you what you want to do and not want to do. I just finished mine and it helped me.
