Improving Names for Disorders
« on: May 03, 2010, 09:10:50 AM »
I don't like these brought-to-you-by-a-committee names like Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Pervasive Developmental Disorder. We've got a few classic mental "illnesses," which lend symptoms to every other made up disorder in the book; the crown jewel, of course, is schizoaffective disorder, which is no more and no less a real thing than the comorbidity of schizophrenia and manic depression.

I think all disorders should have Greek names.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder/Panic Disorder: Phobia

Depression: Melancholia

Autism spectrum: Claviphrenia (closed mind, key mind)

Psychopathy: Cenoclasm (empty destruction) (Cenoclast)

Bipolar disorder: Cyclomania (manic circles) I like this one best. "Why were you in the hospital?" "I hijacked an oil tanker because my cyclomania was acting up."
