Christmas
« on: January 10, 2010, 01:07:26 PM »
Hi everyone. I'm new here and it is nice to join the throng. Over the years I have noticed more and more people saying how much they weren't looking forward to Christmas. I ws just wondering if that fits anyone on here and if so, why?

Christmas has gotten so commercial and it is no longer about peace on earth and good will toward men. Or about the birth of Jesus either. Just a barage of advertisements and solicitations for money. Starting earlier and earlier every year. Or people argueing about what to call it or their political agenda. When my wife was alive we would do the family thing. I still buy everyone presents, but I just stay home. The internet has made that so easy. I just get on line and send it to them. I don't have to go put up with all the crap. If I don't know what they want I just send them a gift card.  8)

I always say the same thing each time Christmas approaches 'bah humbug'. The trouble is with my situation is that the family gets together and tries to put on a good show of being a 'functional' family, when in fact they are 'dysfunctional'. So it's less about the commercialism (that doesn't worry me at all) and more about not faking it when issues continue within the wider family. Christmas..sigh...time to play 'happy families' -ad nauseam.

There are several different reasons that someone may not look forward to christmas.

Alot of people don't look forward to christmas because it is supposed to be a family time... some people who have recently lost a loved one just see the absence of their presence and can only be sad because they are used to that person being there...

When my father died my mother was absolutely terrified of her first christmas with out him... it still brings up bad memories for her now after 9 years...

Another reason for people not wanting it to be christmas is that all the hype takes away the actual point of it all... it is really supposed to be a time when one can relax and enjoy the company of others but now its more like running around everywhere looking for the perfect gift... to be honest I get tired around of christmas because of this, I even get a little tired just thinking of it... In the end it is such a busy season

There is also the fact that some people being spiritually inclined, myself included, feel that the whole reason for the celebrations in the first place is being drained out by the media and the government combined... it's as if they have forgotten that it is in essence a religious ceremony, just because it is popular in the unreligious it doesn't really take away the idea behind it...

Well anyway I am sure there are more than this but I can't think at the moment
