Audible Sense

Does controlled deafness when applied before sleep cause the individual to dream negative dreams possibly depicting harm or danger to the dreamer? This question is based on my own personal dreaming experiences, by using ear plugs before falling asleep the result causes an increase in negative dream content usually depicted by being attacked, hounded, watched or stalked by a harmful body such as a human, animal or of unidentifiable identity. Moreover, the result is a restless night which causes me to awake from sleep on numerous occasions.

By removing the audible sense which by evolution and intuition is essential to our survival does the dreaming brain compensate and create an imaginary world of danger and alertness to instruct the dreamer to awake and re-direct his awareness into the waking world where the possibility of a harmful situation occurring is a high possibility but the awareness of it has been greatly reduced since removing of external noise stimuli. Does the dream content act as a warning signal of their fragility and the exposure the individual is experiencing in the conscious world or is the dream content a perceptually subjective negative interpretation?

Interesting post Mazetocorn.

I apologize for the inefficient post I'm about to write, but I just had to say that's an intriguing read.

I'll have to try it out with some discretion, I HATE bad dreams, even though I really haven't been dreaming much altogether.

Sounds like a very interesting experiment, hopefully you can get some significant feedback, instead of some kind praise from a psychology student.

I agree, that's a very interesting theory that knowing we have a loss of hearing, our mind may try to notify us of danger that could be impending due to the deafness.

I work night shifts, so sleeping during the day can be difficult due to the noise caused by family/friends etc. I will use earplugs on occasion but I don't have any bad dreams that I recall. But I rarely dream dreams that I actually have knowledge of. :-\

I dont know either. I always think about using ear plugs as my DH talks alot while I'm trying to sleep! But I hate wearing them as I can hear myself swallow and breath if I have them in. I'll try to get some and experiment. I'll let you know!
As far as closing of senses though. Since reading your post I was thinking. you may be onto something.........

Recently someone gifted me an eyemask. Again, I had complained about DH watching TV and keeping the lights on till the early morning hours. I think I complained alot cause I recieved 2 eyemask for christmas! LOL! anyway, the first night I slept in the eyemask, I had bad dreams the entire night.

so wearing an eyemask, could be similiar to wearing earplugs.
I have gone to find myself.......if I should return before I get back, Keep me here.
