need help remembering a certain term
« on: August 21, 2009, 02:38:03 AM »
Back in my social psychology class days in college, we read of a sort of thing that happens when a therapist will misdiagnose a patient based on what they believe to be symptoms of mental illness which are not actually symptoms, but are instead a problem with the therapist.

To give an example, say a person who is legitimately on the verge of a scientific discovery happens to tell a therapist this, whereupon the therapist believes they are having delusions of grandeur. The therapist then uses all statements the patient makes in support of the discovery as evidence of his/her madness. Meanwhile, the patient goes home and works on his discovery, eventually bringing about cold fusion, or resurrecting dinosaurs, etc, etc.

Or perhaps it is something a bit more normal, but the therapist still misdiagnoses, and incorrectly reads into the behavior of the patient, bringing about the same effect. Whatever works.

There is a term given for this behavior by the therapist, but I cannot remember it. Anybody know what the term is?

I would be interested in knowing what that is too.

Such things like great scientific and artistic endeavours and discoveries do exist, though they be rare. So I can appreciate why some therapists might think their sensitive patient might have 'delusions of grandeur' - curious isn't it? The ones that do make these 'breakthroughs' might well be ahead of their time, pioneers. Hard for people - even therapists - to appreciate that such a sort of thinking, lateral or greatly inspired, exists out there in the world, as the world seems to mostly consist of sameness and a sea of people moving with (not against) the tide.

Counter transference comes to mind, but I'm not sure.

There are perhaps a couple terms that might apply, but the "core" problem is one called "intellectualism".  This is a typical issue with many therapists today who have no introduction to the Esoteric dimensions of Man as part of their training. Lacking this "process" that forces  a person in training to lessen his or her habitual attachment to the Left-Hemisphere of his/her brain and its thinking [as his/her primary means of self-protection against being exposed to deeply repressed fears hidden within  his/her MIND realm] the typical modern mental health professional today is easily "hooked" by even mild cases of fear within clients and patients, causing the therapist to engage in various delusional ideas.
