How important is getting the correct dosage? For someone with paranoia, or even schizophrenia? I see they use some of the same medications. How harmful is it for a schizophrenic to get a dose lower than what they truly need?

The difference is usually quantitative (one of grade, i.e. too many/heavy side effects or too little relief) rather than qualitative (different effects altogether). Below toxic levels, it's perfectly safe - it's so difficult to assess the correct dosage for psych meds that some trial and error with dosage is often necessary for relief.

First off, any kind of medication taken in excess is dangerous.

Usually for schizophrenics, each case is unique. Psychiatrists would normally start out by giving a smaller dosage and seeing if behavior improves.

If it only does a little, they will raise the dose. If it doesn't help at all, they might switch to a different medication.

even for himself, an average (local) doctor can't estimate a proper dosage of medicine! He would need other experts! or dangerous trial and error. Even a local doctor can't prescribe schizopills for himself: Maybe, he may know a satisfactory medicine; but he's helpless with the dosage. I myself take too much, since my parents are working class. The people in hospital prescribe generally too much. and not too little! E.g. 800mg of 5HTP have a good influence of depressive disorder, but 200mg hinder.  >:( sure

I used to take 5HTP, its a serotonin inhibitor. That literally REMOVED my depression! If it wasnt making me drowsy, i would have still been taking it

NataEames, important question, How did you reduce 5HTP - total, halve, or milligram per milligram ? Kirsten

i would take 500g capsules (4 of those at a time) but if you want to reduce the dose, you can open the capsule and just eat the powder with some water (and sugar if you wish, i don't know how it tastes). Or you can buy 5HTP in tablets and cut it in half.

My problem: I don't take 5HTP..., but Amisulpride. 400mg/d. It ought to have a good influence on negative symptoms....like lack of motivation, no sense in life, violence. (From 500mg/d on, they do good on positive symptoms as mania-parts of psychosis).

Double the dose, if you're taking 400mg without trouble, with most meds doubling wouldn't be a problem (if it was, they would've sold you 200, 100 or lesser dose)

But do ask your doctor please. For safety and so that you don't run out of your prescription twice as fast.

Is your friend a psychiatrist by any chance? I am recommending that you see your psychiatrist or doctor for any prescriptions or dosage information.
I graduated in psychology and have a medical degree too but i when i suggest some medication, I always make sure the person knows to see a proper doctor. A wrong dose can be harmful and potentially fatal.
