End of therapy
« on: September 09, 2009, 01:26:43 PM »
Recently I stopped therapy. I have gone for 5 years and the results have been great. Tons of internal work, self development and so fourth. got a handle on trauma and changed the way I orient in terms of self as well as self and other. The change has been more than significant .

the reason I write this is because although I do not find a need to go any longer and my therapist seems to feel the same unless something comes up ... I am so used to going part of the experience of moving on is a challenge.

I am wondering what other peoples experiences have been when therapy has finished. I feel like I should have a graduation certificate or a celebration ...something to mark the time. Something to end and begin. Some times I miss the sessions since my therapist is like a friend.

Any feed back is appreciated

i think you are experiencing something quite natural. 5 years is a long time for any relationship and the depth of connection and trust in a therapeutic relationship is more profound than most.

i geuss not only do you miss the therapist that you have come to depend on but you have lost that space to talk about you, and to work out what is going on in your life.
And the  LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as  one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:

Thanks for response. I think I am doing OK with this. I mean I am the one who decided enough. I do miss being able to talk about mememe HA!
That is a nice space but really there is no significant state that leads me to the couch. So much work has been successful. My natural instict to do it by myself and I know it.

Go get hammered like everyone else after a job well done. Get three prostitutes instead of just one to celebrate. :)

Hey voodoo, i like the idea of having a ritual. Although your suggested ritual wouldn'y exactly be my choice of a reward. I will consider your idea none the less.

Thanks,

I completely understand your feelings. I have been going to group counseling every week for a year now. I feel very attached to the 2 psychologists that run the session, as well as the people in the group. I feel attached to some more than others of course, but I am going to miss the experience. It is a great safety net if something goes wrong or is upsetting. At the same time, its nice to just be able to be in a safe place and talk. Talk about myself, my problems, or in my case, other people and support them.

I am ending therapy this week since I am graduating, and I am going to miss it!  :-\
