Combination Of Ideas
« on: June 01, 2008, 11:28:54 PM »
I was reading about this form of therapy on wikipedia. It seems to say, correct me if I am wrong, that this method is a combination of therapies. With each type, they take the aspects that have been shown to work and apply those aspects. It "seeks to determine the core ingredients that different therapies share in common." And by that they know what does and does not work.

However this therapy model has been criticized for not taking various angles and other aspects into consideration. It only looks at what has a proven track record, which could lead to a patient's analysis to be incomplete.

thats is it in a nutshell,
integrative approaches are seen to be inconsistent, they are often neither one thing or another.
consistency is important in psychotherapy.
Carl Egan had the best integrative approach described in his book the skilled helper.

i have peronally used an integrative approach when working with problematic drug and alcohol users, using my person centered training to build rapport but applying motivational enhancement techniques, and CBT techniques in order to enhance the clients ability to make changes themselves.
so far this client group is the only valid reason i can see for using an integrative counselling approach.

I was thinking this method might also be good as well for perhaps trauma from a car accident or other serious, painful events in someone's life. It may be best to go with what works when someone is under extreme stress and having to cope with such events. Do you agree?
